What If I’m Not Growing Spiritually?

There’s something disheartening about feeling spiritually “stuck.” You read your Bible, you pray, you show up — but deep down, you wonder…
Am I growing at all?

Sometimes we assume spiritual growth should feel like forward motion: insight, power, transformation. But real growth often looks like quiet faithfulness. Like roots growing down when nothing is visible above the surface.

God doesn’t measure growth the way we do. He looks at the heart posture, not just the fruit. The desire to draw near to Him, even in dryness, is itself a sign of growth.

Let’s be honest — not every season feels alive. There are stretches when worship feels flat, when prayer feels mechanical, when even reading Scripture doesn’t seem to “land.” But here’s the truth: the presence of desire is evidence of life. If you’re longing for God, if you’re showing up even without fireworks — you are growing.

Think of a tree in winter. From the outside, it looks dormant. But under the bark, there’s quiet preparation. Nutrients are being stored. Roots are anchoring deeper. The tree is preparing to bear fruit — even if nothing shows yet.

You may be in a spiritual winter. It doesn’t mean you’ve failed — it means God is preparing you. Some of your most significant transformation happens when no one (not even you) can see it.

Your responsibility isn’t to force fruit. It’s to remain.
Jesus said, “If you remain in me, and I in you, you will bear much fruit.” (John 15:5)

Growth is God’s job.
Faithfulness is ours.

  • Galatians 6:9 – Don’t grow weary in doing good
  • Isaiah 40:31 – Strength is renewed as we wait
  • Philippians 1:6 – He who began a good work will carry it on
  • John 15:5 – If we remain in Him, we will bear fruit
  • Psalm 1:3 – Planted by streams, yielding fruit in season
