Everything in prophetic ministry should flow from personal encounter with God. Encounter comes before techniques and comes before methods, even before good theology (as important as that is). We need the actual, transformative, heart-changing experience of meeting Him personally and being forever marked by His presence.
Not Techniques, But a Personal Encounter with God
Too often, we rush past this. We want the tools, the training, the techniques that will help us prophesy accurately. We want to know how to hear God’s voice clearly, how to deliver words with power, how to move in the prophetic gift effectively. These aren’t wrong desires. However, when they become primary we build on the wrong foundation.
The prophetic isn’t primarily a skill to develop—it’s a relationship to deepen. It’s not mainly about what you can do for God or for others. It’s about a personal encounter with God and how that encounter transforms everything about you—your identity, your wounds, your calling, your daily life.
The Biblical Pattern: Encounter First
Scripture shows us this pattern consistently: Moses at the burning bush didn’t go looking for an assignment to Pharaoh. He went to investigate something extraordinary that caught his attention. The encounter with God’s presence came first. It was burning, immediate, transformative. The assignment flowed from that relationship, not the other way around.
God didn’t anoint David to develop his prophetic gifting or to serve a ministry function. God anointed David because He saw his heart when everyone else looked past him and saw only his circumstances. That encounter transformed everything. God truly saw him, valued him, and chose him. It healed the orphan thinking and established sonship identity. Everything David would do later in his life flowed from who he discovered he was in that moment of divine encounter.
Mary didn’t sit at Jesus’ feet to learn prophetic techniques or develop spiritual skills. She chose intimacy over activity, presence over performance, relationship over religious duty. Jesus defended that choice. He called it “the better part”—the one thing necessary, the foundation from which everything else would flow.
When We Get the Foundation Right
The pattern is consistent throughout Scripture: a personal encounter with God and transformation come first. Ministry then flows naturally from that foundation. We build on sand when we skip the encounter and jump to “prophetic techniques.” We build on sand when we prioritize activity over intimacy with God. We build on sand when we try to develop gifts without establishing identity.
But when we get it right, everything changes. When we prioritize relationship with Him, when we address the wounds that block access to His presence, when we establish secure identity as beloved before we pursue gifting—living in His presence stops being a spiritual goal we’re striving toward. It becomes daily reality.
This journey doesn’t begin with what we learn to do. It begins with Who we learn to experience. Encounter precedes technique. Experiencing His presence comes before developing our gift. Discovering intimacy with God becomes the foundation from which all healthy prophetic ministry flows.
