Real intercession doesn’t start when you or I show up, its already been going on, it’s going on in heavenly places, in the very throne room of God. So if Jesus himself is already at work why would I want to show up with another agenda? Wouldn’t it make more sense to drop my agenda and partner with what he’s doing?

The great news is that God already has a plan. We know that God uses prayer and intercession in the release of his plans. But what if those plans involve intercessors He can trust—those who will stop talking and start listening, who will stop thinking they know the answers when they don’t even know the real problem, and will stop trying to get heaven to partner with their agenda and finally learn to listen and obey?

The Fundamental Difference Between Prayer and Intercession

Very few people have understood that there’s a difference between prayer and intercession. We’ve been taught that intercession is simply louder and longer prayer, or that prayer is for yourself and intercession is prayer for somebody else. When the Lord started to explain to me about position and direction it opened up an entirely new world to me.

Position and direction changes everything:

Prayer: We come as we are, with our needs, wants, and opinions. We are positioned here on earth, directing our prayers upward toward heaven

Intercession: This reverses everything. It begins in heavenly places and is directed downward toward earth. It’s not the time or place to bring anything from me—not my needs, wants, or opinions. Instead, it is initiated by the Lord to bring His will to earth

Every day, situations unfold across the earth that could be dramatically different if trained intercessors were positioned to:

The Crisis in Current Prayer Culture

In my book Point of the Spear I made this statement, “We can’t keep praying the same way and expect different results”. God isn’t hard of hearing. But when you go back and research the history of revivals and people who stepped into extraordinary anointings like how Roberts Liardon did in his series God’s Generals, You’ll discover an interesting trend: before the revival, before the massive ministry began, something happened in that person’s prayer life. They encountered God. There was something different and it wasn’t because they prayed the same prayer that they had always prayed—something shifted.

Here’s the sobering reality: much of what we call “prayer” and “intercession” today is actually rooted in orphaned thinking rather than sonship. We’ve been taught to pray longer and louder to get God’s attention, to perform spiritual acts to gain His approval, and to convince Him through our words that our situations warrant his attention. This approach—while well-intentioned—flows from the same orphaned spirit that Jesus specifically warned against when He taught us how NOT to pray.

The Quantity vs. Quality Problem

The church has had only one concept for increasing effectiveness in prayer: we need more prayer. It’s a quantity approach. More prayer meetings, longer prayer sessions, more people praying. But we don’t really need more orphaned prayer—we need more intimacy. Quantity isn’t the only one way to measure something, quality also matters, and I would argue it matters more than quantity.

When you look at the history of revivals, you will always see the same pattern. It wasn’t because thousands of people cried out for revival, or even hundreds, or even dozens. It was often just one person or possibly two or three, but something different happened to that tiny group—they met with God.

This blog isn’t just motivating you to spend more time in prayer. In fact I’d rather see you spend just 5 minutes really connecting with God than an hour talking at God. This is about partnering with God to see His will accomplished on earth. The world desperately needs intercessors who understand the difference between prayer and intercession, who know how to position themselves in heavenly places, and who can receive and execute spiritual assignments that shift spiritual atmospheres and change natural circumstances.

Biblical Foundations: The Valley of Dry Bones Model

“To be with me where I am and to give your ‘yes’ to what I’m doing.”

This spiritual job description was given directly to the author through revelation. It reframes intercession from initiating action to partnering with what God is already doing.

The Job Description of the Prophetic Intercessor

I remember the exact moment the Lord asked me “Do you know the job description of an intercessor?” I was just about to start to record a video teaching, and this question just stopped me right in my tracks

“No Lord, what is the job description of the Intercessor?” I answered.

Direct from the Lord: “To be with me where I am and to give your ‘yes’ to what I’m doing.”

To be with him where he is and to give our yes to what he’s doing! This is a radical change of perspective from how I was taught how to pray in my childhood youth group.

This isn’t about convincing God to act—it’s about joining what He’s already doing. It’s not about bringing our agenda to heaven—it’s about bringing heaven’s agenda to earth.

If you want to see this job description in action, Ezekiel 37 is a great place to start, especially when you change your perspective from seeing this scripture as a prophetic experience to an intercession assignment.

Prophetic Intercession in Action: Ezekiel 37

Israel was invaded by the Babylonians, Jerusalem was in ruins, and the temple was destroyed. All the leading citizens, priests, leaders were taken into captivity and forcibly relocated hundreds of kilometers away from Israel. The heart and soul of the Jewish people had been ripped out. I would say that every single Jewish person was crying out to God during these desperate years. “Lord save us!”

This is the quantity approach to prayer that we talked about earlier. Very little changed about their situation because of this. It wasn’t that God didn’t care or didn’t hear. He very much cares and very much heard. In fact, he quotes their desperate prayer back to Ezekiel (Ezekiel 37:11).

The point is that God had a plan, and that plan involved just one person who encountered God in a totally different way to set in motion the release of the captives and the restoration of a nation.

The Deeper Problem Behind the Obvious Problem

Israel had been militarily conquered, its leading citizens kidnapped and forced into captivity far away from their homes. In their distress they cried out to the Lord, describing themselves as “dry bones.” But God, in His wisdom, saw deeper than the immediate issue of their captivity and slavery. The captivity (as terrible as that was) wasn’t the real problem—the captivity was in fact a response to a much deeper hidden issue: the Israelites had been spiritually dead long before they were taken into captivity.

The pain of exile had finally opened their eyes to the reality of their preexisting spiritual condition. They weren’t captives who had become spiritually dry—they were spiritually dead people whose condition had led to captivity.

God’s Spiritual Solution to a Spiritual Problem

To simply answer the Israelite’s prayer of “free us from this captivity” wouldn’t actually address the issue that led to the captivity in the first place. A far more radical approach was needed. To address the spiritual roots of this spiritual problem, God took Ezekiel to the source—a valley in the spiritual realm where all the bones of Israel were scattered.

This wasn’t just a vision; this was prophetic intercession at work. God was bringing His intercessor to the spiritual place where the real battle needed to be fought. The invasion, the military defeat, the captivity were all the results of what was happening in the invisible spiritual realm. Israel had spiritually died long ago. The far bigger question than captive or free, was what was going to be done about this spiritual death?

The Pivotal Question That Changed Everything

In this valley, God asked Ezekiel the question that would determine the future of an entire nation: “Can these bones live?”

Think about the weight of this moment. God was placing the entire future of Israel upon Ezekiel’s response. Had he answered out of his natural mind—”No, there’s no way dry bones could ever live”—the future of Israel could have stopped at that point.

But Ezekiel answered from faith: “O Lord God, You know.”

This is the heart of prophetic intercession: To be with God where HE is and to give our yes to what HE’S doing. Where was God during this difficult time? Not where you’d expect—turns out he was in a valley in the spiritual realm. What was he doing there? He was looking for someone to partner with who would give their ‘yes’ to what God was doing.

The Danger of Operating from Our Own Knowledge

This story reveals a crucial principle: the importance of not operating out of our own understanding, or from the context of your problem or point of view. Had Ezekiel operated from what he naturally knew about Israel’s situation, he would have prayed, “Lord, release us from captivity”—addressing only the surface symptom.

The prophetic word was spoken and the dry bones started clattering and banging and came together and flesh appeared and breath entered them and they sprang to life! Not long after this prophetic encounter the captives were released and returned to their homeland and began to rebuild. They rebuilt Jerusalem, the walls and the temple, restoring the land and identity of the nation. All of those things were necessary for the conditions to be set so that Jesus could come to the earth.

Here’s the crux of the problem: out of my own knowledge I’ll always pray too small, too limited, I can only pray from my point of view. God wasn’t just releasing the Jewish captives—he was setting the stage to bring salvation to the world. Ezekiel and the Jewish people could never have known that.

Our knowledge is always limited. We see the immediate problem—captivity, sickness, broken relationships, financial struggle. But only God sees the deeper spiritual issues that need to be addressed.

Only He knows:

• What brought about the current circumstances
• What spiritual roots need to be dealt with
• What His ultimate purpose is in the situation
• How He wants to bring not just relief, but transformation

This is why prophetic intercession begins with listening, not speaking. We must first hear God’s heart and see His perspective before we can effectively partner with His solutions.

God Already Has a Solution; He’s Just Looking for a Partner

Notice the pattern:

• God identified the real problem (spiritual death, not just captivity)
• God brought His intercessor to the source (the spiritual realm where the issue originated)
• God asked for partnership (“Can these bones live?”)
• God provided the solution (prophesy to the bones)
• The intercessor obeyed (Ezekiel spoke as commanded)
• Heaven’s will manifested on earth (the bones came alive)

Other Biblical Examples of Intercession

• Genesis 18:16–33 – Abraham interceding for Sodom: negotiating with God for the righteous
• Exodus 32:11–14 – Moses standing between God’s wrath and Israel’s destruction
• Romans 8:26 – The Spirit intercedes through us with groanings that words cannot express
• Revelation 5:4 – John’s weeping as intercession that releases the Lamb’s worthiness

Each of these examples shows intercessors receiving insight, burdens, or strategy directly from God rather than just praying general prayers.

Prophetic intercession always begins with understanding that God is already at work in situations, hearing God’s heart for people, nations, and situations, then praying what the Spirit reveals—not just our personal hopes or assumptions.

Why the Secret Place Matters

The secret place isn’t just a concept—it’s a spiritual reality. It’s the training ground for every prophetic intercessor. You cannot sustain powerful intercession without intimacy.

To shift the destiny of a nation God doesn’t start with someone with a platform—he takes a single person, alone in their prayer closet who is willing to fully surrender to him.

Starting Where God Starts: With Us

Fortunately we don’t begin our intercession journey at the level of Ezekiel 37 with the future of nations hanging in the balance. We start with the secret place. Long before God will use us to change nations, He needs to change us, personally. This is the fundamental purpose of the secret place: we have to learn how to hear from God, we have to learn how to distinguish between our thoughts and his voice, we need to get healed, we need our identity restored and we need to build a relationship with God that can facilitate the types of experiences Ezekiel had.

In the heat of the moment without all the information that he may have wanted, Ezekiel responded correctly to God’s question and obeyed by giving a wild prophetic word when needed. I don’t think this was by chance—this level of two-way trust had been developed long before this event took place.

Jesus’ Heart Cry: John 17

In John 17, Jesus is praying for himself as he’s heading to the cross, then for his disciples and then specifically for us, believers who come later. This is more than just a prayer—it’s really his mission statement. He speaks directly to us with a heart cry that reveals God’s deepest desire: “Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am.” (John 17:24)

This isn’t just about eternity—this is for now, while we are alive. Jesus isn’t talking about heaven after we die; He’s talking about positioning ourselves with Him in heavenly places while we’re still breathing on earth.

The purpose? Unity. Both with God and with each other.

This is the secret place in action. When we look back at the job description of the intercessor—”To be with Him where He is and give our yes to what He’s doing”—this is John 17 being fulfilled in real time.

Discovering the Secret Place

Psalm 91:1 – “He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.”

The secret place is not just metaphorical—it’s a spiritual reality accessible to every believer. It’s where we learn to move from “speaking at God” to encountering Him. It’s where transaction becomes relationship.

This term “The Secret Place” which comes out of Psalm 91 is used to describe a way of prayer that emphasizes encountering God rather than focusing on your prayer list or personal needs. This encounter could be hearing his still small voice, it could be a vision or even a full on 3rd heaven encounter. The type of encounter is not as important as the idea that you and God are connecting in a two-way relationship. The idea is that God has things to say to you, and you need to hear it. He has direction and correction and revelation to bring to you. Where and how that happens is called the secret place. God has a place not just for after you die in heaven but he has a spiritual place for you to be able to connect with him directly even now while we are still alive.

The Transformation Process

In the secret place, God doesn’t just hear our prayers—He changes our hearts. He doesn’t just answer our requests—He aligns our desires with His purposes.

Think of it this way: if you’ve ever fallen in love, how did that happen? You spent time together, you talked, you laughed, you cried, you did things, you did life—together. If we are to love God with our whole being then the process is the same, it’s just happening in the spiritual rather than the physical realms.

Practical Steps to Enter the Secret Place

1. Create Sacred Space Find your dedicated prayer corner—a physical place that becomes associated with meeting God. This isn’t about location but about intention and consistency.

2. Practice Stillness

• Quiet the mind without emptying it
• Redirect attention from the busy brain to the spirit
• Be ready for the instant flow of information

3. Document Everything Write down experiences without analyzing them. Date everything. God often speaks through patterns and progressions that only become clear over time.

4. Shift Your Expectations Stop approaching prayer as a time to present your list to God. Instead, come expecting Him to speak, to show you His heart, to give you His perspective on situations.

The Lifestyle of Intimacy

The secret place isn’t just a prayer technique—it’s about developing a lifestyle of intimacy with God. This means:

• Changing fundamental expectations: Why wouldn’t God speak to you every time you seek Him?
• Moving beyond the “prayer list” mentality: Instead of bringing your agenda, come to receive His
• Cultivating two-way communication: Quality of communication equals quality of relationship

From Personal Encounters to Corporate Impact

The secret place is where we learn the basic skills of heavenly communication:

• Hearing God’s voice clearly
• Distinguishing His voice from our own thoughts
• Receiving visions, impressions, and divine downloads
• Understanding how to respond to what we receive

These aren’t advanced skills for “special” people—they’re basic equipment for every believer who wants to partner with God effectively.

The Journey of Identity Transformation

In the secret place, God reveals:

• Who He really is (which shows us who we really are)
• His heart for situations (which shapes our prayers)
• His perspective on circumstances (which changes our responses)
• His plans and purposes (which we can then partner with)

Colossians 3:1-4 perfectly captures this journey:

“Christ’s resurrection is your resurrection too. This is why we are to yearn for all that is above, for that’s where Christ sits enthroned at the place of all power, honor, and authority! Yes, feast on all the treasures of the heavenly realm and fill your thoughts with heavenly realities, and not with the distractions of the natural realm. Your crucifixion with Christ has severed the tie to this life, and now your true life is hidden away in God in Christ. And as Christ himself is seen for who he really is, who you really are will also be revealed, for you are now one with him in his glory!”

This is where we move from orphan spirit to sonship, from striving to resting, from performing to belonging.

Every great intercessor in Scripture had a foundation of intimacy with God:

• Moses spoke with God face to face as a friend
• Daniel had a consistent prayer life that led to angelic encounters
• John was known as “the disciple whom Jesus loved”

The secret place is where we develop the trust, relationship, and communication skills necessary for the most weighty assignment of all—to fully love God.

From Orphan Spirit to Sonship: Identity Transformation

What Is the Orphan Spirit?

The orphan spirit operates out of fear, striving, and separation. Even long-time believers can function from this mindset without realizing it.

The Secret Place as Identity Boot Camp

The secret place serves as training grounds for future intercessors—intercession boot camp, if you will. While military boot camp reshapes your body, intercession boot camp reshapes your identity. This is where the hard work of transforming our identity happens, moving us off the worldly system and into the heavenly system.

Within these spiritual encounters of the secret place, we learn critical revelations that fundamentally alter how we see ourselves and God. Perhaps the most shocking discovery is that our worth doesn’t come from what we do—not even what we do for ministry. Your worth cannot come from your calling, your gifts, your ministry, your position, or even from being an intercessor. It comes solely from one truth: we are God’s children, loved 100% because of who He is, having nothing at all to do with our success or failure. This identity baseline of God is our father and he’s a good father and we are his children is known as sonship. It has nothing to do with being male or female it’s about positional identity within our relationship with God. You are fully, 100% loved simply because your God’s child, not because of what you did or didn’t do. It’s unconditional love. The opposite identity of sonship is called orphaned spirit.

Sonship as the Antidote: You don’t pray to earn God’s attention—you already have it.

Sonship means:

• You are fully loved and accepted
• You pray from inheritance, not insecurity
• Your confidence comes from relationship, not performance

Understanding the Orphaned Spirit

The “orphaned spirit” isn’t an evil spirit—it’s a way of describing our human spirit operating from a position of being orphaned from our Heavenly Father. So you can be saved but still operate out of an orphaned spirit. This concept was powerfully demonstrated during the Toronto Blessing revival, where untold thousands of pastors, priests, vicars, and other church leaders, along with millions of people, came from all over the world—literally by the planeloads.

They had incredible spiritual encounters with God the Father and discovered something shocking: even though they had been in ministry for 30, 40, or even 50 years, they had done so out of an orphaned spirit.

During these life-changing encounters, God would take their lives apart like Lego bricks, showing them that their entire relationship with Him had been based on their separation from God rather than His closeness to them. God wanted to rebuild their entire understanding of how He works, who He is, and who we are in Him.

If seasoned pastors can operate out of an orphaned spirit, how much more does the intercessor need this same adjustment?

The Baseline of Human Condition

Once you start to see how the orphaned spirit operates, you’ll recognize it everywhere—it’s the baseline of the human condition. Salvation opens the door to sonship, but it’s up to you to step through it. If you want the type of relationship with God where He uses you like He used Ezekiel, sonship is where to start. It will be almost impossible to build a faith-filled, trust-based relationship with God from the foundations of orphaned spirit.

Jesus’ Teaching on Prayer: The Sonship Model

When Jesus teaches the Lord’s Prayer in Matthew 6:5-13, He first gives several examples of how NOT to pray. These warnings reveal the contrast between orphan spirit and sonship approaches to prayer.

The Public Prayer Trap Jesus warns against “standing in synagogues and on street corners to be seen by others.” This orphan spirit approach seeks human approval and recognition, crying out “Notice how spiritual I am!” with identity based on others’ opinions.

The sonship approach Jesus offers is radically different: “Go into your room, close the door, and pray to your Father who is unseen.” This flows from a heart that says, “I want to be alone with You, Dad,” with security rooted in the Father’s love rather than human applause.

The Many Words Fallacy Jesus also addresses “babbling like pagans who think they will be heard because of their many words.” This orphan spirit approach tries to convince or manipulate God through volume, operating from the belief that “maybe if I say it enough times, God will finally listen.”

The sonship approach trusts that “your Father knows what you need before you ask Him.” This comes from a heart that says, “You already know, but I love talking with You,” confident that Father is already engaged and caring.

The Anxiety About Provision Jesus addresses the pagan worry: “What shall we eat? What shall we drink? What shall we wear?” This orphan spirit approach carries anxiety about the Father’s care and provision, with a heart cry of “I don’t think God really cares about my needs.”

The sonship approach rests in the truth that “your heavenly Father knows that you need these things.” This comes from a heart that says, “My Dad’s got this covered,” operating from deep trust in the Father’s care and timing.

The Pattern Jesus Reveals

Jesus’ model prayer demonstrates what sonship prayer actually looks like:

• “Our Father in heaven” establishes immediate intimacy and access
• “Hallowed be your name” shows worship flowing from love, not duty
• “Your kingdom come, your will be done” reveals alignment with Father’s purposes

The paradigm of intercession has become about finding the devil. You’ll find videos on finding the enemy, understanding demonic warfare and demon busting!

As prophetic intercessors grow in their calling, they inevitably face crucial decisions about focus, maturity, and approach that will determine whether their intercession becomes increasingly effective or slides into dangerous territory. The difference between mature and immature intercession often comes down to two fundamental issues: where you place your focus and whose agenda drives your prayers.

Demonic-Focused vs. God-Focused Intercession

One of the most dangerous traps in prophetic intercession is developing an obsession with demonic activity rather than maintaining focus on God’s activity. While the reality of spiritual warfare cannot be denied, many intercessors make the critical error of becoming more aware of what the devil is doing than what God is accomplishing.

Don’t misunderstand—the devil and his demons are unfortunately real. What we’re addressing here is your focus. Many intercessors actually consider it a sign of their spiritual maturity that they can see demons everywhere, sense demonic strategies constantly, and analyze spiritual warfare dynamics in every situation. However, this hyperfocus on darkness is actually a sign of immaturity, not spiritual advancement.

Here’s a sobering truth: when you go looking for the devil, you’ll never have trouble finding him. But is that our goal as believers—to become experts at finding the devil? This approach fundamentally misses the point of prophetic intercession, which is to partner with God’s solutions, not obsess over Satan’s problems.

• “What is God doing in this situation?”

• “What breakthrough is God wanting to bring?”

When we know we are beloved sons and daughters partnering with our perfect Father, we can rest in His wisdom, trust His timing, and participate in His victories rather than trying to create our own through human effort and spiritual technique.

Real Intercession Maturity

Can I suggest an even simpler approach? If we go back to our job description it says to be with him where he is. If you make that your sole purpose, just to be with him. I know you have lots of issues and problems that your facing, that you need God to deal with, but if you can just drop all that and just be with him, you’ll see that he’s already got this. I know the world is a mess and needs God to do all kinds of things, but if you can just leave that for a bit and just be with him, he’s got this. And when you find him, when you find his presence and encounter him, all you need to do is give your Yes to what he’s doing. Give your Yes to what he’s doing in your life, in your family’s lives, in your neighbourhood and town and nation. Maturity isn’t about fancy prayers, battling the devil or praying longer louder prayers its about intimacy.

In reality, even if you’ve never really considered yourself prophetic, well if you’re a believer you are prophetic because his sheep hear his voice.

Our understanding of intercession is impossible without hearing from God in some sort of way. So it’s crucial to develop these skills.

• God sees what you can’t see: He understands root causes while you see symptoms
• God knows His timing: He sees the perfect moment for breakthrough while you want immediate answers
• God has strategy: He knows the specific prayers needed while you have general requests
• God loves perfectly: He knows what’s truly best for people while your love is limited by human understanding

Characteristics of God’s Voice:

• Higher perspective: God’s thoughts are higher than your thoughts (Isaiah 55:8-9)
