“Was that God, or was that just me?”
If you’ve ever asked yourself this question, you’re not alone. It’s the constant companion of every believer trying to hear God’s voice. You pray, you listen, you sense something — but then the doubt creeps in. What if I’m making this up? What if I’m hearing what I want to hear instead of what God is actually saying?
Here’s what makes this so hard: you’ve probably been disappointed before. You thought God was leading you in a certain direction, but it didn’t work out. Or maybe you’ve seen others claim to hear God’s voice, only to watch their “prophetic words” fall flat. Now you’re second-guessing everything… and the question loops endlessly: Can I really trust myself to hear God’s voice?
The answer might surprise you.
The Real Barrier Isn’t God’s Willingness to Speak
Jesus said it plainly in John 10:27: “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.”
Notice He didn’t say, “My especially spiritual sheep hear My voice.” He didn’t say, “The ones who’ve been Christians for 20 years hear My voice.” He said, “My sheep” — period. If you belong to Jesus, you hear God’s voice. It’s not a special gift reserved for prophets and pastors. It’s your inheritance as His child.
The barrier isn’t on God’s end. He’s speaking. The barrier is on our end — in our belief that we’re actually capable of hearing Him.
Why We Struggle to Trust Ourselves
There are three big reasons Christians doubt their ability to hear God’s voice:
1. Past Disappointments
You thought God told you something, but it didn’t happen. Maybe you sensed you were supposed to take a certain job, pursue a relationship, or step into a ministry opportunity — but it fell through. Now you’re thinking, I must have gotten it wrong. I can’t trust what I hear.
However, here’s the truth: discernment is learned through practice. Hebrews 5:14 says, “But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to discern good and evil.” You’re not going to get it right 100% of the time, especially when you’re learning. That doesn’t mean God isn’t speaking. Rather, it means you’re growing.
2. External Noise
We live in the noisiest generation in history. Between social media, news alerts, podcasts, music, and the constant hum of daily life, there’s barely a moment of silence. Moreover, when we do finally quiet down to pray, our minds are so overstimulated that we can’t tell the difference between God’s voice, our own thoughts, and the mental clutter we’re carrying.
Elijah encountered God not in the earthquake, not in the fire, but in a “gentle whisper” (1 Kings 19:11-13). Consequently, if you want to hear God’s voice, you have to create space for stillness. It’s hard to discern a whisper in the middle of a hurricane.
3. Fear of Being Deceived
This is the big one. You’ve seen false teachers. You’ve heard wild “prophecies” that didn’t come true. You’ve watched people confidently declare, “God told me…” and then crash and burn. Therefore, you’re terrified of being one of those people. You’d rather stay silent than risk getting it wrong.
Nevertheless, 1 John 4:1 doesn’t say, “Never listen to spiritual impressions.” It says, “Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God…” Testing requires discernment, and discernment requires practice. You can’t develop the ability to recognize God’s voice if you’re too scared to listen in the first place.
How to Grow in Trusting What You Hear
If you want to grow in your ability to hear God’s voice and trust yourself in the process, here are three anchors:
1. Anchor in Scripture
God will never contradict His Word. If what you’re sensing doesn’t align with the character of God revealed in Scripture, it’s not from Him. The more you know the Bible, the easier it becomes to recognize His voice. As Psalm 119:105 says, “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.”
2. Seek Wise Counsel
Proverbs 11:14 says, “For lack of guidance a nation falls, but victory is won through many advisors.” When you sense God is leading you in a certain direction, share it with trusted believers who know you, know the Word, and can help you discern whether it’s aligned with God’s heart. Prophetic words aren’t meant to be isolated — they’re confirmed in community.
3. Practice in Small Steps
You don’t have to make every decision a massive spiritual test. Start small. Ask God to guide you in everyday moments — what to pray for, how to encourage a friend, when to speak up or stay silent. As you practice listening and responding, you’ll grow more confident in recognizing His voice. Romans 8:14 says, “For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God.” Being led by the Lord is a lifestyle, not a one-time event.
What If You’re Still Not Sure?
Then take a step anyway. God doesn’t expect you to have perfect clarity before you move. He expects you to trust Him enough to take the next step — even when you’re not 100% sure it’s the right one. Abraham left his homeland without knowing where he was going (Hebrews 11:8). Moses argued with God at the burning bush, convinced he wasn’t the right guy for the job (Exodus 3:7-15). Peter stepped out of the boat, terrified, and started to sink (Matthew 14:28-31).
In every case, God met them. Not because they had perfect discernment. But because they were willing to trust Him more than they trusted their own doubts.
The truth is, if you’re waiting for absolute certainty you’ll never feel 100% confident that you can hear God’s voice. Faith doesn’t work that way. Nevertheless, you can grow in confidence. You can develop discernment. You can learn to recognize the difference between God’s voice, your own thoughts, and the enemy’s lies.
And the beautiful part? God is patient with you in the process. He’s not standing over you with a clipboard, marking you down every time you get it wrong. He’s a good Father, teaching His child to recognize His voice — one step at a time.
So yes, you can trust yourself to hear God’s voice. Not because you’re perfect, but because the One speaking to you is faithful — and He’s committed to helping you hear Him clearly.
