You feel something in your spirit. A nudge. A picture. A phrase. It rises quietly — not with thunder, but with weight. You ask yourself: Is this God? Or is it just me?
If you’ve ever had that moment, you’re not alone. Learning to hear God’s voice — and to trust it — is one of the most beautiful and stretching parts of the prophetic life. It’s also one of the most misunderstood.
Many people confuse discernment with doubt.
They second-guess everything out of fear of getting it wrong. But discernment — true, Spirit-led discernment — doesn’t come from fear. It comes from love.
Discernment is a gift and a process. It’s the ability to test what you’re sensing, not so you can disqualify it, but so you can walk forward in confidence. Scripture tells us to “test everything; hold fast to what is good” (1 Thess. 5:21). That implies God expects us to receive something — and that we’re meant to engage with it, not ignore it.
When God speaks, He often invites us to lean in, not immediately act.
It’s okay to wait. To pray. To ask Him to confirm. To submit it to spiritual leaders. This isn’t hesitation — it’s wisdom.
And here’s the truth: you can get it wrong sometimes. We all do. But God isn’t disappointed — He’s a Father who teaches. When a child learns to speak, they don’t get it right the first time. But each sound is celebrated. Each word is shaped by love. That’s how the prophetic works with God.
