Heaven isn’t closed. Yet for many believers, it feels that way. You pray, you worship, you seek God — but the breakthrough, the intimacy, the power you read about in Scripture feels perpetually out of reach. What’s blocking you isn’t God’s unwillingness. It’s spiritual blockages — specific, identifiable barriers that keep heaven closed above you.
The good news? What blocks heaven can be removed. Jesus didn’t design the Christian life to be an endless struggle for occasional glimpses of His presence. Rather, He made a way for sustained access, open heaven, and naturally supernatural living. However, spiritual blockages prevent many believers from experiencing what Christ purchased for them. These five blockages are the most common culprits keeping heaven closed — and once you identify them, you can address them.
When Spiritual Blockages Close Heaven Above You
Spiritual blockages aren’t mysterious or random. They’re specific heart conditions, thought patterns, or unaddressed issues that create distance between you and God. Scripture is clear about what hinders prayer and blocks intimacy. Matthew 6:14-15 warns that unforgiveness closes access to the Father. Hebrews 11:6 states “And without faith, it is impossible to please God…”. Psalm 66:18 reminds us, “If I had cherished sin in my heart, the Lord would not have listened.”
These aren’t arbitrary rules. They’re descriptions of how intimacy with God actually works. At Forerunner Ministries, we’ve watched countless believers identify and remove spiritual blockages — and experience breakthrough that they thought was impossible. The ceiling you feel isn’t permanent. It’s removable.
Five Blockages You Can Identify Today
First, unforgiveness closes heaven faster than almost anything else. When you hold unforgiveness toward someone — whether they “deserve” it or not — you create a barrier between yourself and God’s presence. Jesus made this non-negotiable in Matthew 6:14-15. Until you release others, you can’t receive what God wants to give you.
Second, unbelief acts as an invisible ceiling. You may pray, but if you don’t actually expect God to answer, you’ve closed heaven above yourself. Faith isn’t pretending to believe something you don’t. Rather, it is choosing to trust God’s character over your circumstances — and that choice removes the blockage unbelief creates.
Third, busyness blocks the stillness God requires. You can’t encounter God’s presence while rushing through prayer, racing through your day, and filling every moment with noise. Intimacy requires space. When busyness dominates, heaven stays closed — not because God withdrew, but because you haven’t created space to receive.
Fourth, pride keeps you from seeing the blockages in the first place. Pride whispers, “I don’t have unforgiveness” or “My busyness is justified” or “This isn’t really sin.” Pride blinds you to what’s blocking you — which is precisely why Scripture warns that God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.
Fifth, unconfessed sin creates the barrier Psalm 66:18 describes. When you know something is wrong but refuse to address it, you cherish sin in your heart — and prayer becomes powerless. This isn’t about perfection. Rather, it’s about honesty before God and willingness to deal with what He reveals.

Breaking Through to Open Heaven
Identifying these spiritual blockages is the first step. Removing them is the journey. As we explored in our recent post about prayers hitting a ceiling, recognizing what’s blocking you changes everything. You’re not stuck permanently. You’re simply not yet positioned under the opening.
Learning to develop your prophetic gift begins with removing what blocks intimacy. You can’t hear God clearly when spiritual blockages create distance. However, when you address unforgiveness, unbelief, busyness, pride, and unconfessed sin — heaven opens above you.
